I just happened to stumble onto this post, while looking for recommendations on cleaning a rugrunner for my son, which is made by Safavieh.
I also purchased a beautiful Safavieh rug last year, that I absolutely loved. My cat urinated on it. He does not potty on any other rug that I have. I tried cleaning it, and finally gave up. My neighbor suggested that maybe it was something in the rug that attracted the cat. I had not thought of that until he mentioned it last week. And now after reading this post, I firmly believe that this is the case.
Dang! I loved the rug too. When it warms up outside this Spring, I will clean it again, and give it to my son. He does not have pets. No matter what is done to clean the rug, and a urine smell cannot be detected by humans, cats will always go back to it. So, at least my son can have the beautiful rug.

My new Safavieh Bella smells so strongly, even after a MONTH and 15 times vacuuming that you can smell it from the doorway on the other side of the house. I have now vacuumed 15 times and EVERY time the canister fills to capacity with gray dust and wool fluff (it must be so deep in the rug another 50 times vacuuming will still shed. The amount of dirt deep in this rug and the smell are shocking but who wants to pay $$$ and try to figure out HOW to ship a 9X12 foot rug this heavy back?

Stacey,

Since you have to build a large pit it would be very difficult to do this yourself. I had mine done by the professional rug cleaning dudes! Good luck!

I would look into having it cleaned… we have used a Rug Doctor on this rug (and all of our others!) and while it works perfectly on our other carpets it didn’t touch the Safavieh. It smells fine now that it’s been cleaned and we haven’t had any more potty problems. I’m sorry about your sweet dog passing… it is heartbreaking to lose a beloved family member like that. Good luck!

I have an 8 foot Safavieh shag rug and another one of the same in a 9 foot square. My older beloved dog who has recently passed, pottied on the round one but the shag is so thick I can’t tell where, but I can smell it. Wondering where I can go to have it cleaned. I live in Macomb, Mi., or if I can clean it myself.
