There are a million different answers to this question! It depends on the size of your aquarium, if you want fresh or salt water, how many fish you want, how often you plan on doing water changes. If you’re setting up a 20 gallon beginner level tank there are so many small schooling fish that can make a big impact. I would get all the particulars together and ask at your local fish store… they’ll be able to help you go through all the steps.
